Bio and Research Interests

PhD Student at Environmental and Geographical Science, University of Cape Town.

My research interest is in numerical weather modeling and climate data analysis with a view on the application of artificial intelligence. I am focused, specifically, on the design and development of next-generation numerical methods for modeling atmospheric dynamics. For my B. Tech research project, I developed a “Skew-T diagram” algorithm for plotting upper-air meteorological data and computing various parameters for characterizing atmospheric conditions. During my master, in the Environmental and Geographical Science department at the University of Cape Town, I run a stretch-grid global climate model (MPAS; model for prediction across scale) to simulate the climatological structure of the West African Westerly Jet (WAWJ) and evaluated its influence on Sahel precipitation in another 26 global climate model simulations (CMIP6; coupled model intercomparison project-version 6). For my doctorate thesis, I am developing a coupled atmospheric, hydrological and hydraulic model to simulate extreme rainfall and flood hazard from selected atmospheric systems. Such a tool may foster reliable predictions of both extreme rainfall and flooding, which can help society and humanitarian agencies make effective emergency response plans towards mitigating the devastating impacts of floods.

Besides studying, I write computer programs ranging from desktop applications to web applications (Full-stack development) using various programming languages including C#, Python, and recently, FORTRAN. During my spare time, I develop my skills in bash scripting, VBA, CSS, HTML, various frameworks, and technologies, including machine learning.
